Castle O’Neil

Castle O’Neil liegt in der Grafschaft Antrim, Ulster. Der früheste Druck der Melodie findet sich in der Sammlung des Musikforschers Edward Bunting, A General Collection of the Ancient Music of Ireland (1796, Nr. 27). Die Air wurde außerdem in Specimens of various styles of music referred to in a Course of Lectures read at Oxford and London, and adapted to keyed instruments von W. Crotch, Mus. Doc., Professor für Musik in Oxford, veröffentlicht.

Crotch, der von 1823 bis 1832 Direktor der Royal Academy of Music (London) war, hielt in den Jahren 1800–1804 sowie 1820 Vorlesungen über verschiedene Formen nationaler Musik. Diese ließ er in drei Bänden binden, die allgemein als „Crotch’s Specimens“ bekannt sind. Die irischen „Specimens“, zu denen auch diese Melodie gehört, befinden sich in Band 1.
